Clerical Business
The clerical business certificate program (Cert.) is designed to provide vital technical skills for the student whose goal is to enter this field, but who does not have any previous office experience. This program provides the specialized training that can make a difference in job preparation.

Clerk/Typist
The HCC clerk/typist program (Cert.) is designed to provide fundamental office background and specific technical skills in accounting, business and office technology. These skills are required for someone to advance in the business and administrative technology fields. With Highland’s state-of-the-art computer technology and knowledgeable instructors, graduates will be independent, technically proficient and versatile employees. This program may lead to possibilities for promotion within the office setting and provides a framework for continuing education.

Desktop Publishing
The HCC desktop publishing program (Cert.) is designed for individuals who want to upgrade their computer skills to keep up with rapid technology advancements in the printing industry. This program will give students the business, office technology and information technology skills essential to join the workforce. This program is also suitable for individuals who are interested in desktop publishing for personal fulfillment.

Information Word Processing
The information word processing associate of applied science (AAS) and certificate program (Cert.) is intended for individuals who want to increase their computer skills to keep up with the latest technological advancements in the computer industry. Highland’s updated curriculum and cutting-edge technology in office technology, communications and data processing give students the essential background to be successful employees in this field.

Medical Transcription
The HCC medical transcription program (AAS and Cert.) utilizes dictating and transcribing equipment, located in Highland’s individualized office technology lab. The medical transcription program involves courses in anatomy, medical terminology, communication and business. Students are able to progress through this program at their own rate and at times that are convenient.

Office Technology
The Highland office technology program (AAS) provides fundamental training in the communications, keyboarding, shorthand and word processing skills that are essential for a student who pursues a career in this field. The Highland Community College office technology lab gives students convenient access to the most recent computer technology developments. With further specialized training, students may advance to specialized office positions in legal, medical, technical, educational and business fields. There will always be a strong demand for competent office technology specialists who have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Possible Career Paths:
Business and administrative technology students may pursue careers as a word processor, office manager, administrative assistant, personnel interviewer, customer service representative, medical secretary and medical transcriptionist.

The national average annual salary for a desktop publisher is $18,800-$34,500.
Average salary of a medical secretary with a certificate in Illinois is $17,430-$22,510.
Personnel managers’ average salary in Illinois is $26,000-$46,740.
The average salary for a medical transcriptionist in Illinois is $15,000-$18,000.
